Strategic Research Areas

The Department originated from two Departments of History and Geography in Chung Chi College founded in 1951 and United College founded in 1956 which became member colleges of CUHK when it was established in 1963. In 2001, the Department was re-named as Department of Geography and Resource Management (GRM). Currently, the Department has around 30 faculty members and adjunct professors, and around 200 undergraduate students and 100 postgraduate students.

The department’s mission is to pursue geographical knowledge and effective resource management to seek solutions for urban and regional sustainability. Our Department aims to maintain and improve its ranking as one of the top geography programmes in Asia and the world with balanced and comprehensive coverage in geographical information and analysis, physical and environmental systems, urban and regional development and global change and resource management. Our Department together with affiliate Institutes within and beyond the University will foster interdisciplinary research works with a view to enhancing research quality in the broad field of geography and urban studies and making stronger sustainable impacts locally, regionally, nationally, and globally through the platform of four research institutes (IEES, IOFC, ISEIS and HKIAPS) at the university level.
