With climate mitigation becoming increasingly urgent, in 2020 countries will update their Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is a key technology for CO2 mitigation. This conference will focus on the CCUS chain with a specific focus on situations where the movement of (CO2) is stretched across country borders to eventually create a global network of CO2 flows and subsequent disposal. One potential enabling technology is CO2 shipping that either relies on dedicated CO2 ships or possibly utilizes return legs of LNG (liquefied natural gas) or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) ships. We take a multiple-disciplinary approach to explore the various opportunities and challenges. We will organize an international conference on “Global Chains of CO2 Capture, Utilization and Storage” in December 2020, originally scheduled in April 2020 at CUHK but then moved online due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. A special issue will be published on “Opportunities and Challenges of Global CCUS Chains” with Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews in 2021.
