GRM to host 12th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism
GRM will host the 12th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism on 9-11 May 2024. Supported by the Master of Social Science in Sustainable Tourism (MSSST) programme, the conference has been held annually since 2012. The upcoming conference in 2024 revolves around the theme of “Tourism Development and Investment in Sustainability”, aiming to explore how tourism and sustainable investments can shape a better world. It will discuss how to diversify markets, reduce risks, enhance resilience, and involve locals. It will also examine how investments can foster innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship while conserving nature and culture.

GRM PhD Student won Best Student Paper Award
Our PhD student Zhengke Zhou won the 2024 Best Student Paper Award from the Economic Geography Specialty Group, American Association of Geographers (AAG). Zhengke examines Shenzhen’s battery recycling industry to reveal how materialities of the environment shape state-firm interactions in the development of green industries.
GRM students crowned in Open Data Hackathon 2023
Four of our Year 4 undergraduates, Yu Lok Hin Nicolas, Tse Kwan Hon Kelvin, Li Wang Tsun Harold and Chan Shun In Caleb won Champion and Best Teamwork Award in the Tertiary Stream of “Open Data Hackathon 2023”. Their winning proposal of a real-time warning system of hazard trees envisions an open dataset that can be edited by officials through an interdepartmental dashboard and contributed by the general public through an app.

Seven GRM scholars were named on the list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists published by Stanford University in October 2023. They (in alphabetical order of surnames) are Prof. Chen Yongqin David, Prof. He Ying Sylvia, Prof. Kwan Mei Po, Prof. Lai Yuk Fo Derrick, Prof. Lau Ngar Cheung Gabriel, Prof. Leung Yee, and Prof. Shen Jianfa.

In Memory of Professor Leung Cheuk Fai Jimmy
It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Professor Leung Cheuk Fai Jimmy on 26 July 2023. Professor Leung was a distinguished alumnus of CUHK and served as our adjunct professor from 2014 until the very end of his life. Our thoughts are with Professor Leung’s family.
GRM members honoured for planning projects
Two projects involving GRM members are selected for The Hong Kong Institute of Planners Awards 2022 for integrating innovative planning ideas and existing planning elements to inject new life into the city.
Prof. Ng Mee Kam, Dr Lee Wai Ying Joanna, Prof Li Jing Victor, Prof Shen Jianfa and two PhD students, Yeung Tsz Chun Arthur and Zhu Jiageng, received Certificate of Merit for their project “A Living Museum: Point-Line-Plane Conservation of the Ma On Shan Iron Mine Landscape”. Prof Au Wai Kwong Elvis and Prof Ling Kar Kan also received Certificate of Merit for their project “Reimagining a Future-ready Kennedy Town and Mount Davis”.

GRM PhD students excelled in international paper competitions
In the 2023 Graduate Student Paper Competitions of the American Association of Geographers, GRM PhD students Xuan He and Guannan Zou brought home the champion and runner-up awards, respectively, of the competition organised by the Asian Geography Specialty Group, while Xuan He also received an honourable mention from the Urban Geography Specialty Group.
Xuan He’s research explores the walking behaviour of older adults and the walkability of the built environment for them by using open data and big data, while Zou’s paper analyses the Chinese state’s roles in promoting regional growth driven by innovative industries.
GRM undergraduate won GIS application award
In the 2023 ESRI Young Scholars Award, our undergraduate Chan Yin Wang Adrian won first runner-up in Hong Kong in the Individual Application category for his project on “GIS Application in Feng Shui”. Retirement Recital in honour of Professor Fung Tung
After 35 years of distinguished service at the Department of Geography and Resource Management (GRM), Professor Fung Tung will retire at the end of academic year 2022/23. In honour of Professor Fung, GRM will join hands with the Department of Music and the Centre for Chinese Music Studies to organise a concert entitled “Earth as Sensed through Music and Images: Professor Fung Tung Pipa and Guqin Retirement Recital” on 29 June 2023. GRM to host 11th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism
GRM is hosting the 11th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism on 12 May 2023. This conference has been held by GRM annually since 2012, supported by its Master of Social Science in Sustainable Tourism (MSSST) programme.
