Global Change & Resource Management

Our modern world is often defined by its modern use of energy, but the reliance on energy is accompanied with prominent concerns. Multiple oil crises in the past decades and widespread electricity shortages in developing countries distinguish the importance of secure and reliable energy supply. Affordable energy not only affects poverty alleviation but also the economic growth. The worry over depleting fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas raises demand for sustainable energy such as wind and solar. Though energy consumption substantially lifts people's living standards, the negative impacts on the environment have become more and more serious. The associated emissions of conventional air pollutants and significant water consumption deteriorate local and regional air quality and damage ecosystems. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption have been held responsible for alarming climate change based on sound scientific evidences. Nuclear, hydro, wind and solar energy helps solve some problems caused by fossil fuels but raises some others.

Energy and environmental policies play important roles in energy development to minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive ones. Courses and training in our department enrich students with knowledge on various energy types and the methods, advantages and disadvantages of their utilization. Students will be exposed to different energy and environmental policies to understand their application and design. Furthermore, a particular focus of the training will be on the skills of critical thinking and in-depth analysis to employ the knowledge for finding solutions to real-world problems of energy and the environment.
