Studying spatial dimensions of poverty in Hong Kong

Principal Investigator:

ZHANG, Li

Summary:
In recent years, poverty has been a heat topic of concern in Hong Kong because of widening income inequality and the increasing number of the poor. The extant literature has systematically explained why income inequality in Hong Kong has persisted despite impressive economic growth. What remains relatively little understood is the geographic aspects of inequality and poverty. This study aims to investigate the spatial dimensions and patterns of urban poverty and the causes of poverty district formation. We are going to capture poverty heterogeneity between districts and investigate geographical factors that influence poverty. The findings of this project will provide a basis and insights on public policy planning in general, and on the design of geographically targeted antipoverty programs in particular.
