Summary:
Hong Kong has played a leading role in terms of foreign investment, trading, financial and logistics services in the rapid economic growth of mainland China for the past two decades. However, the leading position of Hong Kong in China has recently been challenged by increasing global integration of China and rising cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. China's source of foreign investment has been diversified. Furthermore, China has changed from a position in shortage of capital to that of abundant capital. All these developments raise serious questions about the future role of Hong Kong in economic development in China. This study attempts to assess the changing role of Hong Kong in Great Pearl River Delta and China in general. The focus will be the consideration of risks and trends of marginalization of Hong Kong.
