Messages from the chairman

Many people have a wrong perception of Geography that it is nothing more than maps, place names and rock types. Geography, indeed, is so much more than that. It is a multi-disciplinary subject encompassing diverse knowledge among social and natural sciences. Its emphasis is placed on the study of interactions between human activities and the natural environment, and factors contributing to socio-economic, environmental and resource management problems as well as their solutions.

Resource has always been a central focus of interest in Geography. To understand, utilize and manage resources in a geographical context is crucial to the betterment of humankind. With the acceleration of resource exploitation and environmental degradation, there is an urgent need to focus on sustainable development with broad-based geographical knowledge and spatial information technology in our programme of studies so as to better prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

In light of this, the Department of Geography has changed its name to the "Department of Geography and Resource Management" (地理與資源管理學系) in August 2001. The new name signifies the Department's mission in the pursuit of geographical knowledge and a practical broad base focus on effective resource management pertinent to the sustainable development of the human race. Resource covers all kinds of natural and environmental resources while Management is focused on their spatial monitoring, assessment, evaluation, optimal usuage, allocation and strategic implementation. The name conveys a sense of professionalism within an academic discipline.
